Thanks for the lesson, Cat. I was born with a natural ability to learn these kinds of things Sarge Fighting Lynette Mae Beer , so I guess I'll have to apply myself a bit more on the computer. wink

Very cool that you now have the hate crime law.

If it was just American nuns... You should have heard what I heard this week from the LGBT activists from Italy and Poland No. For instance, in Italy the Parliament rejected two weeks ago to add sexual orientation to a hate crimes bill. Even more:
Quote:
A number of MPs even motivated their choice by saying that the very expression “sexual orientation” is in itself “ambiguous”, as it could include things like paedophilia, zoophilia, necrophilia, incest and so on. And they didn’t simply state it verbally, but put it writing in a legal document that the majority of the parliament then approved.

The Vatican issued a press release after that, approving the rejection of the law by the Italian Parliament.

Won't actions like that in Italy put them in conflict with the EU agreements on human rights?

It would have to go to court, I suppose. And then go all the way to the European courts. But in Italy at the moment, anything goes. They already have "sexual orientation" in their laws, because they had to include it due to a directive of the EU commission on non-discrimination in the workplace. At the time there no doubts about what it meant...

The EU has some very progressive dicta regarding human rights; it seems only a matter of time before the Vatican secedes. wink

Our new cabinet has send today its program to the parliament for discussion and approval. From the text (the bolds are in the original) Smile:

Quote:
During this next term, the Government is committed to fight all discrimination and, in particular, to make every effort to provide all people, regardless of their sexual orientation and gender identity, the full enjoyment of constitutional rights. With this step, we contribute to a just society, structured on respect for fundamental rights, democracy and the value of inclusion of all people.
Thus, the government's commitment is based on:
The proposal of the adoption of an Equality Act;
• Removing legal barriers to the achievement of civil marriage between persons of the same sex;
• Improve support mechanisms for victims of discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Before reading that, I hadn't thought of emigrating from the US, but Portugal is beginning to look very good. Kudos the cabinet that proposed this and hopefully the parliament will approve it.

Yes, it is great news indeed. Let's hope things go well in parliament. Actually, last Friday the Green Party, who is in a coalition with the Communist Party, has resubmitted in Parliament its proposal regarding same-sex marriage. The new proposal, unlike the previous one, now includes adoption.

I am sorry for being sarcastic, but it seems that the country that has been trying to teach for years other countries to be true democracies has, once again, allowed the civil rights of a minority to be voted. And, of course, the minority lost. Maine homophobes have won.

Believe me, wildlx, the irony of that is painfully evident to those of us living it. I still can't fathom why the joy of my love has to be tempered by the loss of my civil rights.

This should put the kabosh on the argument for a state-by-state approach to winning back our right to marry. Now 40 states have a law or a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. I have always believed the only way is through the US Supreme Court. That's how slavery was ended, how women and Blacks got the vote and segregation was ended. It is the only way we will achieve full rights as citizens.

The lawsuit Ted Olson and David Boies now have before a federal court in California argues that the California gay marriage ban is unconstitutional. It has passed the preliminaries and is set to go to trial in January. That is our best chance. Otherwise, we're doomed.
